craft-proof

Proofing for the Craft apps, per language: spelling, suggestions, grammar checks and hyphenation, a Hunspell .aff/.dic reader, user words, ignored words and a dictionaries folder. It moved here from WordCraft's wordcraft-proof with its history and the same public API. No unsafe, no panics on hostile input, and it builds for wasm32-unknown-unknown.

Languages

Language Spelling Grammar Hyphenation
English (en-US, en-CA, en-AU, en-GB and the British-spelling Englishes such as en-NZ) SCOWL 2026 Hunspell dictionary per English + en-extra.txt, dialect policy (en-variants.txt); a dictionaries-folder English first; without SCOWL the installed Hunspell English, else the built-in Moby list (below) yes Moby list, our patterns, heuristic
Polish, Portuguese, Italian the installed Hunspell dictionary yes TeX patterns (embedded, or a Language pack)
Croatian, Turkish, Russian, Czech, Indonesian, Spanish (es, es-MX, es-419, es-UY) the installed Hunspell dictionary (Russian also ru-extra.txt) yes Turkish and Russian rules; English fallback otherwise
German — — TeX patterns (embedded, or a Language pack)
Bulgarian — — syllable rules

Grammar rules, suggestion tuning and the rule-based hyphenation are code: they work in every build.

Use

use craft_proof::{ProofLang, check_text_with, suggest_in, Options};
use craft_proof::hyphen::{hyphen_points_in, Limits};

// A paragraph whose runs are in different languages (byte ranges of `text`).
let text = "The colour of the hous.";
let issues = check_text_with(text, &[(0..text.len(), ProofLang::EnGb)], &Options::default(), true, false);
let fixes = suggest_in("colour", 5, ProofLang::En);
let breaks = hyphen_points_in("hyphenation", &Limits::default(), ProofLang::En);

Hunspell dictionaries are not bundled; they are read from, in order: the folder given to set_dictionaries_folder, WORDCRAFT_DICTIONARIES, WordCraft's own folder under the user's application data (%LOCALAPPDATA%\WordCraft\dictionaries and %APPDATA%\WordCraft\dictionaries, ~/Library/Application Support/WordCraft/dictionaries, $XDG_DATA_HOME/wordcraft/dictionaries), then the usual Hunspell and LibreOffice locations. None on the web.

State is process-wide: add_word, ignore_word, set_dictionaries_folder, load_user_dictionary/save_user_dictionary. The crate reads no document model; callers pass plain text and language spans.

Language data

The word lists and patterns live in craft-i18n (language-data/), not here. build.rs embeds them at build time:

  • CRAFT_I18N_DIR=<absolute path to a craft-i18n checkout> embeds language-data/.
  • Unset (a fork, docs.rs, offline): the crate builds with a warning and no embedded Language data. English spelling then falls back as below, hyphenation that needs the data is off, and grammar and the Hunspell languages work as before.
  • CRAFT_I18N_REQUIRED=1 (releases) makes a missing directory or file an error.

Tests that pin results of the data run only when every file the build embeds is there (craft_proof_data); src/no_data.rs runs every public entry point when none is (craft_proof_no_data). A partial data folder runs neither set.

  • By default every carry-over locale is embedded: English, the German, Polish, Portuguese and Italian patterns and our own word supplements (*-extra.txt, MIT), as before Language packs. CRAFT_PROOF_EMBED picks the set: en (English and our supplements only; the others come from Language packs), de,pl, or all. Making en the default is CP4.4, done in the release that publishes and pins language-packs-1. craft_proof::packs::embedded_locales() lists what a build embeds.

Language packs

API (fixed by plan/pack-contract.md, plus the additions marked +):

// craft_proof::packs
pub fn set_packs_dir(dir: Option<PathBuf>);            // <font-store folder>/language-packs; bumps dictionary_generation()
pub fn reload(); // + same folder, after a pack is installed or removed
pub fn packs_dir() -> Option<PathBuf>;                 // +
pub fn installed() -> Vec<InstalledPack>; // InstalledPack { locale, name, licence, path }, by locale
pub fn licence_texts() -> Vec<(String, String)>;       // (title, text): embedded English notices, then each pack's LICENCES/*
pub fn load_errors() -> Vec<(String, String)>; // + (locale or folder, reason): packs skipped, pattern files that failed
pub fn embedded_locales() -> &'static [&'static str]; // + locales with embedded upstream data, not our supplements ("en-us", "en-gb", "en-ca", "en-au", "pl", "pt", "it", "de" by default; the four English ones with CRAFT_PROOF_EMBED=en)

// craft_proof (crate root)
pub enum ProofLang { …, Pack(PackLocale), Other } // + Pack: any language without tools of its own (nl, fr, sr-Latn…)
pub struct PackLocale;                                 // + Copy; PackLocale::new(tag) -> Option<Self>, .as_str() "nl-nl", .primary() "nl", Display
impl ProofLang { pub fn pack_locale(self) -> Option<PackLocale>; } // +
pub fn pack_dictionary_file(lang: ProofLang) -> Option<PathBuf>; // + the .dic a Pack language reads now; None = unchecked

ProofLang::from_tag now gives Pack(locale) for every valid language tag it has no tools for (nl-NL → Pack("nl-nl"), fr-FR, ja-JP, sr-Latn…); Other is left for x-none, und, zxx, mul, mis, i-… and malformed tags. A Pack language is spell-checked and given suggestions from its Hunspell dictionary (dictionaries folder → installed pack → system Hunspell) through the shared affix engine with default tuning, and hyphenated from its pack's hyphenation.pat; it has no grammar rules and the generic English spelling message. Without a dictionary or pack it behaves exactly as Other did (no marks, English hyphenation fallback). has_dictionary(tag) / ProofLang::is_proofed() say whether a Pack language has a dictionary now (read on first use, cached). Loaded Pack dictionaries share a 256 MB budget (estimated from their files); the least recently used goes first, but never one used in the paragraph being checked, and languages with no dictionary take no room. Downstream matches on ProofLang need a Pack(_) arm; code() stays &'static str and is "" for it, as for Other: anything that keys, saves or reports a language (settings, caches, JSON/MCP output) uses tag(), which is code() for the built-ins and the locale (nl, fr-fr) for a pack language.

Which pack serves a language: its locale, then shorter prefixes (fr-ca → fr), then another region's pack of the same language (nl → nl-be), never another script's (sr-latn never reads sr, which is Cyrillic). A tag naming its language's default script reads the script-less packs (sr-Cyrl-RS → sr, bs-Latn-BA → bs), from a small default-script table. The existing languages map their Hunspell names the same way (pt_BR → pt-br, pt, any pt-*).

Spelling dictionaries and hyphenation patterns for other languages come as Language packs: the app's font store (craft-font-store, item kind language-pack) downloads, verifies and unpacks them; this crate reads them.

craft_proof::packs::set_packs_dir(Some(store.language_packs_dir())); // at startup
craft_proof::packs::reload(); // after a pack is installed or removed

Both set_packs_dir and reload reload every dictionary without a restart and bump dictionary_generation(), so cached checks are dropped.

Layout of <packs folder>/<locale>/ (the archive root), the folder named by the lowercase BCP 47 locale (nl, pt-br, sr-latn):

File
pack.toml required: locale (= the folder name) and licence (SPDX) strings; name (endonym), class, sources optional; other keys are ignored
spelling.aff, spelling.dic Hunspell pair, any encoding the reader supports (optional)
hyphenation.pat UTF-8 TeX or plain Liang patterns (optional)
LICENCES/<file> upstream licence texts, shown by licence_texts()

Lookup order. Spelling: the dictionaries folder, then an installed pack, then the system's Hunspell dictionaries, then (English only) the built-in core list. A slot's Hunspell names map to pack locales (pt_BR → pt-br, then pt, then any other pt-* pack). Hyphenation, every language but English: an installed pack's patterns for a word in the language's script (Russian, Bulgarian, Turkish: their script; others: letters the patterns know), then the embedded ones, then the language's rules or the English fallback as before.

Hostile packs. Every file is read only if it is a regular file (never through a symbolic link), size-capped (pack.toml 1 MB, licences 4 MB, dictionaries and patterns 64 MB), and a pack is skipped, with the reason in load_errors(), when its folder isn't a lowercase language tag, pack.toml is missing, too large, not TOML, lacks locale/licence, names another locale, or has a value under a file-naming key (path, file, files, *_path, *_file, *_files) that leaves the pack (.., an absolute path, a drive, a backslash). Folders starting with . (the store's temporary folders) are ignored. A dictionary that fails to load is reported by dictionary_load_error like any other; nothing panics.

English is always checked

English spelling uses the first of these that is there; english_source(lang) says which.

  1. Dictionaries folder: the English's own .aff/.dic pair (en_US, en_GB or en_CA) that the user put in the folder set with set_dictionaries_folder, in WORDCRAFT_DICTIONARIES or in WordCraft's own dictionaries folder. The user's choice comes first.
  2. Installed English pack: reserved for Language packs (craft-libs#485, CP4.2).
  3. Embedded SCOWL: the English's own SCOWL rel-2026.02.25 Hunspell dictionary from CRAFT_I18N_DIR (language-data/en-us, en-gb (British -ise), en-au or en-ca, spelling.aff + spelling.dic), read by the affix engine. Australian English reads en-AU (Australian words such as billabong, with en-GB's spelling policy); en-NZ, en-IE and the other British-spelling Englishes read en-GB; Canadian English reads en-CA. A word is right when the English's own dictionary knows it (or en-extra.txt does), never because another English's does (colourblind is wrong in en-US, colorblind in en-GB); the one exception is Australian English, which also takes en-GB's words (enquiry: en-AU's list keeps inquiry only). Suggestions come from the English's own dictionary (en-AU's for Australian). SCOWL's size-60 lists keep one spelling per dialect, and Word accepts more, so British English also takes the -ize spellings of its -ise words that American or Canadian English spell so (organize, realization; never wize or advize, and never -yze: reanalyze stays American), and en-variants.txt flags the other dialect's spellings and accepts this dialect's other spellings of known words (judgement in en-US). English with no dialect (is_correct) takes a word any of the three knows. Suggestions offer a missing space only between two lower-case words of three letters or more, after every one-word candidate, and no name or abbreviation (Col) for a lower-case word. With SCOWL embedded the system locations aren't searched.
  4. System Hunspell: the English's own pair in the system locations. Never another English's: an en_US dictionary would mark British spellings, so en-GB and en-CA without their own use the built-in list, which has both spellings. Each name is looked for in every folder before the next name; a file that can't be read is skipped for the next name or folder, up to the first eight candidates (the rest aren't tried); one file is read once for every English that uses it. COMPOUNDRULE, ONLYINCOMPOUND and COMPOUNDMIN (ordinals such as 21st) are read; flag-based compounding (COMPOUNDFLAG…) is ignored for English rather than refused; OCONV writes suggestions as the dictionary says (don’t), as for every language. None on the web.
  5. Built-in list: data/en-words.dic, the whole Moby word list (about 165,000 words, 344 KB compressed, words only) built into the crate, with data/en-extra.txt (WordCraft's supplement of modern words, a copy of craft-i18n's) and the inflection rules. A word it doesn't know is misspelled. Suggestions are the words one edit away (swap, missing, added or changed letter), looked up in the list, for words of up to 32 letters: swaps first, then common words, neighbouring keys, the same first letter.

The embedded Moby list (language-data/en-us/en-us.dic) is no longer a spelling source: it is the same list as the built-in one, and stays as the hyphenation word list. en-variants.txt applies to every source above when it is embedded.

A dictionary that is there but can't be read (encoding, size, parse error, no words) is skipped, and dictionary_load_error(lang) gives the reason; it never panics. Text in other languages is never checked against English: a language without its dictionary has no spelling marks.

data/en-words.dic is public domain: the Moby Hyphenator II list by Grady Ward (Project Gutenberg eBook #3204), from craft-i18n's language-data/en-us/en-us.dic with its break points dropped and a few entries that are far more often typos left out (teh, abd, nad, ur, u, r; the list is in the generator). Regenerate with cargo run -p craft-proof --example en_words -- <craft-i18n>/language-data/en-us/en-us.dic crates/proof/data/en-words.dic. data/en-extra.txt is WordCraft contributors' own list (MIT OR Apache-2.0); keep it in step with craft-i18n's copy.

The SCOWL notice (SCOWL's licence, the Ispell BSD licence of the affix files and Benjamin Titze's notice) is embedded with the dictionaries: craft_proof::scowl::notice(), for an About window.

Embedding SCOWL adds 2,056,533 bytes of Language data (the en-US, en-GB, en-CA and en-AU .aff/.dic and the notice); the Moby list (432,905 bytes) stays for hyphenation.
