Orbit TV 0.99.8: After Dark daytime, Option B
Paul approved this release on 4 November 2026 at 09:50 and 09:59. The change is to After Dark's daytime eligibility only. This release includes 0.99.7.
What's in it
AfterDarkDaytimeCrossover (ChannelSchedule.kt) adds 19 of After Dark's own late-night cult films to its day block, 05:00 to 21:00. They stay in the late rotation as well.
The 19 films:
- PG or PG-13: Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!, Big Trouble in Little China, Critters, Harold and Maude, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Mars Attacks!, Night of the Comet, Phantom of the Paradise, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978).
- 1950s and 1960s monster films: It Came from Outer Space, The Blob (1958), Them! (1954), The Day of the Triffids, Plan 9 from Outer Space.
- 1970s television films: Count Dracula (BBC, TV-PG), The Night Stalker, The Night Strangler.
Ratings were checked against the catalogue. A PG or PG-13 rating isn't taken to mean suitable for children.
Unchanged:
- Safeguards: every eligibility and rating safeguard stays as it was. The day suggestion rules still exclude NC-17 and X, no film from outside After Dark's pool is added, and no withdrawn mainstream film returns.
- Late night: the 14-day night rest, the events and committed bookings.
Checks before install
- 416 unit tests pass, including the hand-run replays. Lint has no errors.
- AfterDarkReviewTest checks:
- all 19 are in the day block
- the intense and NC-17 titles aren't, among them The Evil Dead, Hellraiser, Re-Animator, Society, Videodrome, Pink Flamingos, Santa Sangre, Possession, Angst, Funny Games, I Saw the Devil, Ghostwatch, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Street Trash
- no withdrawn mainstream film is on the day list
- Four-week real-pool replay on box copies taken at 10:05, avoiding every other channel's plan (docs/replays/after-dark-daytime-0.99.8.txt):
| Before Option B | 0.99.8 | Paul's target | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Films by day | 34 | 53 | about 53 |
| Daytime repeat gap, median / shortest | 3.7 / 3.3 d | 5.5 / 5.0 d | about 5.5 |
| Different films, whole channel | 127 | 135 | more |
| Any film again within 7 days | 223 | 202 | |
| Clashes with other channels | 0 | 0 | none new |
| Fixed-order fallbacks | 0 | 0 | no regression |
| Late-night rest | 14 d | 14 d (shortest late gap 14.0 d) | preserved |
- Late-night variety: different late-night films fall from 84 to 73, because a film shown by day also rests before it can play late.
- Fingerprints: every committed fingerprint is identical to 0.99.7's. Only 305 differs (docs/replays/replay-fingerprints-0.99.8.txt).
Rollback
Install 0.99.7. No saved data changes.
Installation record (4 November 2026, 10:34 GMT)
Paul approved this release at 10:33. The TV was on its launcher, with no Orbit playback since 09:01. I took a snapshot of all 96 schedule files, then installed over 0.99.7. The box reports 0.99.8-after-dark-daytime. Orbit relaunched; once the checks were done I returned the TV to its home screen with a launcher intent. There was no crash in the log. The rollback APK is in outputs/revision-0.99.7.
- Plans: every plan kept every remaining entry. No episode cursor was reset.
- Top-ups: six channels whose plans had dropped under six days ahead topped up on their own: Gold (51), Riot (71), Evidence (29), Heroes (67), Rewind (86) and ToonZ (113). All had clashes=0.
- After Dark loaded with clashes=0 and didn't need a top-up. Option B's daytime eligibility applies to its next bookings.
- Planning speed, measured on the box:
- The cached airings work:
othersMswas 6.7 s for the first channel, then 0.3 to 0.8 s. - The planning itself is still slow on the box: 4 to 18 seconds per top-up, on equal turns (Riot) as well as weighted channels. It was already like this before; it's not new in 0.99.8.
- The likely cause is
dayPartForworking out every listed title's key again on each programme picked. I'll address it in the next release without changing any rule.
