Vortex (601): Toonami
Status: agreed in principle with Paul 3 November 2026, configured in 0.88.0 (ChannelIdentities.kt), awaiting his OK to install.
Identity: Toonami UK's action cartoons and anime, with modern anime complementing it rather than leading. Tagline idea: none yet.
History, verified: Toonami began as a Cartoon Network UK block in December 2000: weekdays 16:00 to 18:00 and 21:00 to 23:00, weekends 10:00 to 12:00 and 22:00 to midnight. Almost all anime (Dragon Ball Z, Tenchi Muyo!, Gundam Wing); for a long time the only non-Japanese shows were The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest and Batman Beyond. It became CNX in October 2002, a Toonami channel on 8 September 2003, and closed on 24 May 2007. History sources: Wikipedia, Cartoon Network (UK and Ireland), Toonami (UK and Ireland), Boomerang (UK and Ireland) and Fox Kids, read 3 November 2026.
Core: Dragon Ball Z, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo!, Samurai Jack, Batman Beyond, ThunderCats, Jonny Quest, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball GT, Yu Yu Hakusho, Sailor Moon, Outlaw Star, The Big O, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Paul's favourites Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters and Mortal Kombat.
Supporting: the other action cartoons (Batman, Superman, Justice League, Voltron, ReBoot, Beast Wars, The Powerpuff Girls), Zoids, Robotech, Ronin Warriors, Naruto, and the reviewed modern anime.
Surprises: Movie Night films, and the grown-up anime late.
Time of day:
- 06:00 to 12:00 the staples: action cartoons, the classic anime and Paul's favourites.
- 12:00 to 16:00 the staples with reviewed family anime (Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and later, Avatar, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Regular Show, Gravity Falls and others) and the core anime.
- 16:00 to 18:00 and 21:00 to 23:00 Toonami hours: the core, as the real block ran. Both hours share one rotation.
- 18:00 to 21:00 evening: the core with the evening anime (Gundam 00, Escaflowne, Trigun, Megalobox, Mob Psycho 100, My Hero Academia and others).
- 23:00 to 06:00 late: the grown-up anime (Attack on Titan, Ghost in the Shell, Jormungand, Now and Then, Here and There, Murder Princess, Those Who Hunt Elves, Tears to Tiara, Zakuro, Karas, The Maxx, Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden, Dragon Ball Z Abridged) with some core repeats.
- Movie Night, Friday and Saturday 20:00 to 22:00, reviewed films.
Precedence: Movie Night comes first. On Friday and Saturday it takes 20:00 to 22:00, and Toonami's evening hour picks up with the first programme after the film, so it runs about 22:00 to 23:00 on those nights.
New suggestions: evening suggestions join the evening. Daytime suggestions not yet placed by hand air late, never in the daytime, until they're given a block.
Order: in order throughout, as anime tells its stories.
Crossover: Rewind is the preferred home of Regular Show and Gravity Falls; Vortex keeps them in the afternoon. Heroes is the preferred home of the DC and Marvel cartoons.
New arrivals: classic action cartoons and anime of the Toonami kind; grown-up anime goes late.
