Window › Toolbars › Manage Toolbars… and Manage Toolbars… in the All Tools
drawer's menu open a dialog that lists the toolbars made with New Toolbar.
A name typed for the selected toolbar renames it, + copies the selected
toolbar or, with none selected, makes a new one, and the trash can deletes
it (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/tools.html, Manage toolbars).
VectorCraft's own details:
- A rename applies at Enter, when the text box loses focus, or at OK. The
name follows New Toolbar's rules: not empty, at most 200 characters, and
not another toolbar's in any case.
- A copy is called "<name> Copy" (then "<name> Copy 2"), shows a little
below the toolbar it copies and below earlier copies; a new toolbar is
called "Toolbar N".
- Each change applies at once; deleting also removes the groups torn off
the toolbar.
- When the typed name is refused, a click on +, the trash can or another
toolbar is not applied, so the name can be corrected. When the selected
toolbar is deleted elsewhere while the dialog is open, none is selected.
- Renaming or deleting a toolbar closes the All Tools drawer and a group's
flyout open on it; a change of case only leaves them open, and the Tools
panel's flyouts and other toolbars' stay open.
- Each change shows under Window › Toolbars and is kept with the workspace.
New commands: window.toolbar.manage, window.toolbar.rename,
window.toolbar.duplicate and window.toolbar.delete, with catalog rows for
their labels in every language.

Part of #1759
Per CodeRabbit on #5327: on Windows Edit Original looked for photocraft.exe
only on the PATH, but PhotoCraft's MSI installs it to ArtCraft\PhotoCraft
under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs (per user, the default) or Program Files (for
everyone), neither on the PATH. Look first at the path the installer
registers under App Paths (HKCU, then HKLM; `reg query`, as i18n reads the
locale, which also covers a folder chosen in setup), then those two default
folders, then the PATH. Each candidate must still be an .exe.

Per review on #5327: Preferences › File Handling › Edit Original With (an app
path and Choose…) becomes the checkbox Use System Defaults for Edit Original,
on by default. Off, Edit Original opens a raster image in the app that made
it, PhotoCraft, looked for only where it installs; any other file, or no
PhotoCraft, goes to the system's default app. The preference is a boolean, so
prefs.set over control or MCP can no longer name an executable. The label has
a row in all 26 catalogs.

Preferences › File Handling › Edit Original With picks the app Links
panel › Edit Original opens a linked file in: System Default (as before),
PhotoCraft (found in /Applications or ~/Applications on macOS, on the
PATH elsewhere) or Other Application, with a path field and Choose….
The desktop host's new `open_file_with` service starts only an
application (an .app bundle on macOS, an .exe on Windows, an executable
file elsewhere), with the path as its only argument and never through a
shell. Edit Original still refuses control requests.

Buttons beside the Edit tab's wheel switch between the smooth color wheel,
a segmented wheel of solid patches (24 hues by 5 saturations, its markers
moving as freely as on the smooth wheel) and color bars: one solid bar per
recolored color in row order, where a click selects a bar's row for the
color sliders and a drag moves the row without changing a color. The
dialog opens on the smooth wheel and keeps the choice while it is open;
the dialog field is `display` (`smooth`, `segmented`, `bars`).
View > Outline was one app-wide flag saved in the interface preferences,
so after Cmd+Y every later launch drew every opened or new document as
outlines, with no fills. The flag is now part of each document's view:
a document opens in Preview, each tab shows its own Outline or Preview,
and the setting is not saved at launch. An older preferences file that
holds the flag still loads, and its value is ignored.
The Outline command and ui.set's outline act on the active document and
are an error without one.
Save… in the Document Info panel menu now writes only the category the
panel shows, with Selection Only applied. With All Categories shown it
writes every category, as before. docInfo.save takes an optional
category (a document.info category id) and passes it to document.info.
The Edit tab's color mode menu offers Global Adjust, with Saturation,
Brightness, Temperature and Luminosity sliders from -100% to 100% that
open at 0%, which changes nothing. One slider changes every recolored
color, each one separately, in its own model; the rows keep their new
colors and the art previews the change. The Edit tab also shows the
color sliders of the selected new color in the other modes.
recolor.apply takes globalAdjust {saturation, brightness, temperature,
luminosity}. Excluded rows and colors no row holds stay as they are, a
rewritten color group takes the same change, and with Limit to Library
each row's new color takes it before it snaps to the library.
Docs: docs/mcp.md, docs/control-protocol.md, docs/target-app-parity.md.
The color sliders now mark the row they edit with `model: "new"`
instead of a dialog-wide flag, and `recolor.apply` reads a row's own
`model` before the command's. Rows the sliders did not edit keep each
color's model, so with RGB art and a CMYK color group, a slider edit of
one row no longer turns the other rows' art CMYK. Another edit of the
row's new color, Reset and rows reduced again remove the mark, and
`recolor.randomize` moves it with its new color.
The Assign tab gets a Color Mode menu (HSB, RGB, CMYK, Lab, and Tint when
the row's new color is a spot color of the Limit to Library library) and
its sliders under the rows. They edit the first selected row's new color
and are disabled with no row selected. Once they have edited a color in a
mode, the preview and OK send recolor.apply with model "new", so the art
takes the color in that mode.
recolor.apply rows take an optional tint (percent, default 100): art linked
to the row's global or spot library swatch takes that share of its tint.
recolor.randomize keeps a row's tint.
With write root ...\out, a save to ...\out\x.svg:evil was accepted: it stays inside the root, but writes a hidden stream no folder listing shows. A ':' in any name after the drive is now refused with the device names. The check is a plain name test, so it is covered on every platform; the check-then-open race (item 1 of the report) is a documented limitation and is not touched.
Blob Brush Tool Options gain Angle (-180 to 180 degrees, 0 by default)
and Roundness (0 to 100 percent, 100 by default), with a preview of the
tip and three dabs; a drag in the preview square sets the Angle. The
elliptical tip keeps its angle on the page along a stroke, a 0 percent
tip is drawn 0.1 percent as wide as it is long, and Size set to
Pressure still varies its size. path.blob takes angle and roundness,
and both values are kept with the tool's options.
While a non-round tip drags, the Blob Brush shows the outline of the
area it covers with its length label, and an Alt drag that smooths
shows the Smooth tool's thin line.
GIF, WebP and Targa files hold no resolution field, so document.formats and
the export docs now say that ppi, and the resolution that width or height
gives, are stored in the file except in those three formats.
PNG, PNG-8, JPEG, WebP, GIF, TIFF, BMP, Targa and PSD exports take
`width` or `height` in pixels. Each file is scaled so that its own
artboard, `rect` or art bounds is that wide or high, so with
`useArtboards` every file gets its own scale. `width` wins over
`height`, and either wins over `ppi` and `scale`, in the order an
Export for Screens row reads its size. The scale stays within 0.01 to
64 pixels per point and the file stores the resolution that results.
A value that is not a positive number is refused.
The per-file scale comes from `ScreenSize::scale_for`, which Export for
Screens rows already use. Rows keep their own size: their format
settings still drop `width` and `height`. `document.formats` lists the
two options for every raster format.
With `zip: true`, document.exportForScreens deflated nothing: every file
went into the archive stored. Each file is now deflated, or stored when
deflating does not make it smaller, as file.package's archive does. The
file list, the names and the reply's fields stay the same; `bytes` and
the archive's contents change. Entries keep the fixed 1980-01-01 date, so
the same files still give the same archive.
The deflating writer moves from package.rs into fileio/zip.rs as
`zip::deflate`, beside `zip::store`, and file.package calls it there with
its own date and error text. The test reader `zip::entries` reads
deflated entries too. The `zip` option's text in docs/mcp.md,
docs/control-protocol.md and the command's params says the files are
deflated.
A double-click on the Type on a Path or Vertical Type on a Path tool
reported that the tool has no options. It now opens Type on a Path
Options for the selected type on a path, the same dialog as Type ›
Type on a Path › Type on a Path Options…. With nothing selected, or
with no type on a path selected, nothing opens and `tool.options`
returns the menu command's error, as the Rotate tool's double-click
does without a selection.
Docs: docs/control-protocol.md, the `tool.options` params doc.
Highlight Substituted Fonts is now a preference in Preferences › Type,
next to Highlight Alternate Glyphs, on by default and saved with the
other preferences (`prefs.set highlightSubstitutedFonts`). The canvas
reads it through `RenderOptions::highlight_substituted_fonts` for every
open document; a document's own setup no longer decides it. File ›
Document Setup no longer shows the checkbox and keeps Highlight
Substituted Glyphs.
A file saved with Document Setup's Highlight Substituted Fonts off now
shows the pink highlight when it opens, while the preference is on.
The file still opens with the stored value, and saving it again keeps
that value.
`document.setup` no longer reports `highlightSubstitutedFonts`. It
ignores the key and adds a `warnings` entry that names `prefs.set` to
its reply, so an older reply passed back still applies its other keys.
The raster cache of type under a raster effect now also redraws when
Highlight Alternate Glyphs changes.
After imageTrace.setView, screenshot and render_preview still drew the
tracing result, because ui.render renders with the export options and only
the canvas turns on trace views. Only the app window showed the view.
ui.render now takes traceViews. With traceViews: true, Image Trace objects
draw in the view set with imageTrace.setView, as on the canvas, both
headless and in the running app. screenshot and render_preview take
traceViews and pass it on; without it they draw the tracing result, as
exports do. The trace-and-style prompt names the argument.
A supersampled render drew Outline view's lines, type outlines and dotted
guides as little as a quarter of an output pixel wide, so they came out
pale gray. The renderer now scales those widths and the guides' dashes by
the supersampling factor in the larger frame, so the lines stay one output
pixel wide.
Docs: docs/mcp.md (render_preview, screenshot), docs/control-protocol.md
(ui.render).
ui.dialog.set stored any field name it was given, so a misspelled field
(`discrad` for `discard`) was kept without effect and the dialog then
ran with its old value. It now answers such a field with an error that
lists the dialog's fields, and leaves the dialog unchanged.
A dialog accepts the fields it holds, `__` fields, `discard` with a
discard button, `preview` with a live preview, the fields it reads
before a control adds them (each spec's `inputs`, for example Copy and
the object options of the Transform dialogs, Move's `distance` and
`angle`, the reference point, `path` of the export options dialogs,
`searchFolder`, Brush Options' `tips`, the Justification and
Hyphenation values that open blank, the Corners `kind` and `radius` of
corners that differ, the Gradient Stop popover's `color`, `opacity`,
`location` and `spread`, and a new artboard's `color` and display
marks), and the fields it passes to the command it runs: every
parameter of the generic `command` dialog's command, and the
`textureImage` that Load Texture… sets in the Glass and Texturizer
effects. Edit Selection now opens holding `deleted<i>` for each of its
rows, so setting a row number it does not have returns an error, and
Transparency Flattener Presets opens holding the selected preset's name
and options instead of adding them on its first frame.

Holding Alt over a selection the Shape Builder had already mapped built
the planar map a second time, to add the outline edges that erasing
hits. A merge, and a Live Paint Bucket fill of a plain selection, also
dropped the map, so a gesture that left the document unchanged was
followed by another full build.
The Shape Builder now builds its map with the outline edges the first
time, and both tools keep the map until the document, its revision or
the selection changes.
When the inputs have more than 128 segments, a hover with the Shape
Builder or the Live Paint Bucket now builds the map on another thread
and highlights no region until it arrives, instead of holding up the
frame; the canvas checks for it each frame. A press waits for the map,
and the headless MCP host waits for it after a move. The web build has
no threads and builds the map at once. The Live Paint Selection tool's
hover no longer builds a map of the selection, which it did not use.
With Use Artboards and two or more artboards, a document with no visible art gets only the artboard files. The useArtboards and range descriptions, the document.export and document.exportEps params text, the control protocol and the parity line now say so.
Within about a minute of its window no longer being visible, macOS App
Nap lowers the app's threads to the lowest priority and coalesces its
timers. On a loaded machine, control requests then took seconds to
answer, and the 60 s timeout reply arrived up to 26 s late.
When the control channel is on (--control or VECTORCRAFT_CONTROL_PORT),
the app now holds an NSProcessInfo activity (user initiated, allowing
idle system sleep, latency critical) for as long as it runs, so App Nap
does not apply. The activity does not keep the Mac awake.
docs/control-protocol.md states this in the paragraph on the 60 s
timeout.
With Use Artboards and two or more artboards, EPS export now writes a
central file under the path's own name before the file of each artboard.
The central file contains the whole document, and its bounding box is
the visible art, as in an export without Use Artboards. An export of a
single chosen artboard still writes one file at the path's name, and
Export for Screens still writes one EPS per artboard. When no art shows,
only the artboard files are written.
Docs: the useArtboards params text, the MCP export tool's range text,
docs/mcp.md, docs/control-protocol.md and docs/target-app-parity.md.
Every change in the Image Trace panel traced the selected Image Trace
object again at once, and there was no way to adjust several settings
first and trace once.
The panel now has a Preview checkbox before Trace. It is on by default
and kept with the UI preferences; Reset to Default leaves it. With
Preview off, setting changes wait in the panel until Trace applies them
as one undo step, or until Preview is turned on again. When Preview is
turned on with no Image Trace object selected, the object is traced
with the waiting changes when it is selected again. A change of view
keeps the waiting settings, and selecting another Image Trace object
shows that object's own settings. The control channel's ui.set takes
imageTracePreview.
ui.render, which render_preview and screenshot call in the headless
session and in the app, rendered the artboard with the canvas options:
8-bit compositing and edges smoothed shape by shape. A PNG export
composites in floating point and supersamples edges, so the preview
showed edge colors the exported file does not have, most visibly where
shapes meet edge to edge.
ui.render now renders with the options of a PNG export on white, so
its pixels equal the export's at the same scale. render_preview also
no longer enlarges an artboard smaller than max_side: with the default
max_side of 1024, a 612 x 792 page came back as an interpolated
791 x 1024 image, and it now comes back at 612 x 792. docs/mcp.md and
docs/control-protocol.md describe this.
Window › Symbol Libraries and the Symbols panel's Symbol Libraries Menu open each symbol library
in a library panel of its own, on the shared library panel code the swatch and graphic style
libraries use (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/manage-objects/traces-mockups-symbols/create-or-import-symbol-libraries.html,
.../symbols-panel-options.html, .../create-and-place-symbols.html).
- Basic Shapes: one original library generated in code (circle, squares, triangle, diamond,
hexagon, star, burst, arrow); no other app's libraries.
- A click adds a library symbol to the document's Symbols as one undo step, with its Symbol
Options and the resources it uses (nested symbols, patterns, swatches, brushes, graphic styles,
images), and makes it the current symbol; one already there isn't added again, a clash of
names numbers the library's. Shift/Cmd-clicks select for Add to Symbols. Dragging a library
symbol onto the canvas adds it and places an instance there, in the same step.
- Save Symbols… (library menu, Window menu) and Save Symbol Library… (Symbols panel menu) write
the document's symbols as a .vectorcraft document holding only them, into the user library
folder (User Defined, window.userSymbolLibrary1-10) or a file; Other Library… reads the symbols
of any document VectorCraft opens, and a file it can't read is an error.
Commands: symbol.libraries, symbol.library, symbol.addFromLibrary (place, x, y),
symbol.saveLibrary, symbol.loadLibrary; UI: window.symbolLibrary (.other), ui.saveSymbolLibrary
(dialog saveSymbolLibrary). i18n rows in every complete catalog; docs updated.
Step 3 of the Rectangular Grid tool and Arc tool help pages
(https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/tool-techniques/rectangular-grid-tool.html,
https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/tool-techniques/arc-tool.html)
and the Tools page (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/tools.html)
say a double-click on the tool opens its Tool Options. For these four tools
the double-click (tool.options, and Enter once #2891 lands) said the tool
had no options (#2691).
The Tool Options are the tool's click dialog in dialogs/shapes.rs, opened
without a place to draw (shapes::open_options; a `__toolOptions` field
marks it), as the review of #2979 asked: no copied form code. Its OK runs
tool.setOption and draws nothing; Cancel changes nothing. The grids' dialogs
are titled Rectangular Grid / Polar Grid Tool Options there. The options
are what the next drag draws with and what a click's dialog opens at:
- Line Segment: Length and Angle (now kept by the tool and used by the
click dialog) and Fill Line (new: shape.line {fill: true} gives the line
the current fill; the click dialog has it too);
- Arc: lengths, Reference Point, Type, Base Along, Slope, Fill Arc;
- the grids: dividers, skews and switches, plus the Default Size and
Reference Point, now kept by the tool (width, height, reference) for the
click dialog; a drag leaves them out of its command.
The grids' Reference Point is drawn only as the 9-point locator (it also
showed as a plain number field).
New strings (Rectangular Grid Tool Options, Polar Grid Tool Options, Fill
Line) have rows in all 24 catalogs.
Verification:
toolbar::tests::double_clicking_the_line_arc_and_grid_tools_opens_their_tool_options
double-clicks each tool's toolbar button: the dialog and its title, Cancel
leaves the next drag as it was, OK draws nothing, the next drag uses the
option and a click's dialog opens at it (a grid at its Default Size);
line_segment_options_and_fill_line, grid_default_size_is_an_option_the_drag_leaves_out,
fill_line_gives_a_new_line_the_current_fill. Grid dialog tests now expect
the stored Default Size. Live: double-clicking the Rectangular Grid tool in
the release build opens Rectangular Grid Tool Options; OK with 2 and 3
dividers, then a drag, draws a 3 × 4 grid.
Export for Screens and the Asset Export panel's Export encoded and wrote
every file on the UI thread, so the window stopped responding until the
last file was written. For 50 artboards in PNG at 1x, 2x and 3x, PDF and
SVG (250 files, 47 MiB), the dialog's OK took a median of 43.8 s in a
release build on Windows.
With Enable Background Export on (Preferences › File Handling), OK now
checks the settings, remembers them and takes a snapshot of the
document, and the dialog closes. The thread that writes background
saves and exports then encodes the files and writes them into the
folder, or one ZIP in it, and the export progress dialog's Cancel stops
it before the next file. The same OK takes under 0.001 s, and the files
have the same names and bytes. With the preference off, without a
folder, on the web and over MCP and scripts (document.exportForScreens
and assets.export), the files are made at once with the same reply as
before.
Both commands report one progress step per file, so the progress dialog
shows "File 3 of 250" and MCP progress notifications count the files in
place of the encoders' artboards and pages.
Docs: docs/target-app-parity.md, docs/control-protocol.md, docs/mcp.md.
The reference app creates a new symbol with F8 on Windows and macOS.
VectorCraft opened Symbol Options for a new symbol from the Symbols
panel's New Symbol button, from the panel menu's New Symbol… item and
from Help › Search Commands…, but no key ran it, and F8 did nothing.
ui.symbolOptions (Symbol Options…) now has the default F8 on every
platform. With a selection the key opens Symbol Options for a new
symbol, as the New Symbol button does: OK makes the symbol and puts an
instance of it in place of the art, and Cancel makes none. With nothing
selected the key opens no dialog, and the status bar says that nothing
is selected. Shift+F8, Cmd+F8 and Cmd+Shift+F8 keep their commands.
Keyboard Shortcuts now lists the command with its key.
