The Live Paint faces were right; the Pathfinder regions over-counted.
Two small circles inside a big one, touching each other at one point,
gave the big circle's region only one of its two holes, and the other
hole came out as a region of its own.
linesweeper walks the boundary of the two touching holes as one loop
and, when the walk comes back to the shared point, cuts the second
hole off as a child of the first and flags it outer, as if it were an
island inside it. face_groups trusted that flag, so the hole started a
face. The same cut goes wrong the other way when an outer contour
touches its own hole: the outer contour comes out as an island inside
the hole.
Such a loop winds the same way as the contour it was cut from, against
its flag. face_groups now checks every contour's flag against its
winding; a pass where any disagrees is grouped by geometry instead
(each hole goes with the smallest outer contour of its mask around it).
Passes where they all agree keep the sweep's tree as before, at the
cost of one area per contour.
Adds deterministic tests for both shapes of the bug and checks in the
proptest regression seed.
Capture sweep-piece source attribution before endpoint pinning can move its
midpoint off the original outlines. Keep the existing lookup after pinning
when the original piece has no source.
Add planar coverage and native compound Make/Expand/undo regressions, and
document the existing front-most source-fill rule.
Add Anchor Points builds the new anchor list in one pass, Swatch Library add looks names up in sets, full_documents dedups placed keys with a set, width profile lookups and mark insertion use binary search, and the symbolism tools cap and thin the previews of a long drag as Liquify does.
For every hole (when growing) or island (when insetting), the check measured the
distance to every segment of the input with the nearest-point search and took the
minimum, so the cost grew with holes x segments. Segment bounding boxes are now
computed once, a segment whose box is farther than the offset distance is skipped,
and the search stops at the first segment that is close enough. The decision is the
same as before; a test compares it with the old full scan on random segment sets.

Where a line lies under the outline of a closed path in front of it (such as
a shape an earlier merge made, which takes the place of the art in front of
the lines), the planar map gave that stretch only to the closed path, so the
line had no piece there. A merge or an erase across it left the line whole,
and the next map split the new shape along it into two regions.
- pathops: each planar edge records every input it lies on, and
BuilderArrangement::lines_under holds the lines' pieces under a closed
outline in front of them. lines, edges and Live Paint are unchanged.
- tools: BuilderMap adds those pieces to its lines, so a merge or an erase
removes the stretch between the regions it takes, as it does elsewhere.
An Alt-click where a line lies under an edge hits the one in front.
addon.pathtools.divideDashes cuts the selected paths (or only their
direct-selected segments) into separate open paths of a dash length
measured along the curve, with an optional gap (gap pieces dropped
unless removeGaps is false) and Fit to Corners and Ends; pieces keep
the path's appearance, one undo step, at most 100000 pieces. Geometry
in vectorcraft-pathops; dialog with unit fields and Preview; tests,
sweep cases, catalog rows and docs.
Path Precision Tools gains the Shared Edge Merge Tool, kept out of the
toolbars (All Tools drawer and Object › Plug-ins › Path Precision Tools,
no shortcut), and Keep Shared Points Together:
- Shared Edge Merge Tool (sharedEdge): over two paths touching at two
coincident anchors (tolerance 0 to 3 pt) hovering shows the two
stretches and the merged edge; a click replaces both with it, half way
between them, or following the upper (Shift) or lower (Alt) path. Both
paths stay closed or open, anchors either stretch has inside are
matched on the other, one undo step.
- Making ends: near anchors meet on a click and an anchor one path lacks
is added to match; Shift+Alt asks for this inside a stretch.
- Keep Shared Points Together: an option that makes Slide Anchor Along
Path, Extend Path and Set Anchor take coincident anchors along. Nothing
else in the app changes.
- Shared Edges section in the Anchor Inspector: brush diameter,
coincidence and the option.
- Commands addon.pathtools.mergeEdge and movePointsTogether, params
validated and covered by the command sweep.
- Cursor stand-in, catalog rows in every language, docs and tests.
Path Precision Tools gains two tools, kept out of the toolbars (All Tools
drawer and Object › Plug-ins › Path Precision Tools, no shortcuts):
- Corner Tool (cornerTool): editable corners on any path through the
existing Live Corners. Hover shows an eligible anchor, a click cuts a
corner with the tool's radius and kind, a drag sizes it (Shift: whole
values), a corner's marker selects it and loads its values, resizes it
and removes it at 0 or on a double-click; a corner never grows past
what fits; an Alt-marquee cuts every eligible anchor inside.
- Corners section in the Anchor Inspector: radius, kind, selected count,
Apply to Selected Anchors.
- Slide Anchor Along Path (slideAnchor): a drag runs an anchor along its
curve, the neighbouring segments refitted by the keep-shape kernel;
Shift snaps where the tangent is a multiple of 45° from the constrain
angle.
- Commands addon.pathtools.cornerSet, cornerRemove and slideAnchor, one
undo step each, params validated and covered by the command sweep.
- Cursor stand-ins, catalog rows in every language, docs and tests.
Path Precision Tools gains the Parametric Shape Tool: ten kinds of shape
(rectangle, ellipse, polygon, star, ring, arrow, cross, heart, gear,
speech bubble) that stay editable as numbers.
- Geometry in vectorcraft_pathops::addons::pathtools::shapes: each kind's
outline, corner rounding limited to the middle of a side, a fingerprint
of the outline, recovery of centre, size and rotation after a move,
turn or scale, and recognition of plain rectangles, ellipses and
regular polygons.
- The tool (parametricShape, All Tools drawer and Object › Plug-ins ›
Path Precision Tools only, no shortcut): drag from the centre (Shift:
45° steps), arrow keys change the count and values while dragging,
handles edit a selected shape, double-click places one.
- Commands addon.pathtools.shape.create / .set / .convert, one undo step
each; params checked (counts 3..1000, sizes up to 16384 pt).
- A shape keeps its numbers in one object-data entry (vc-pathtools-shape)
that SVG export already leaves out; anchor edits make it a plain path.
- Parametric Shape panel, cursor stand-in, catalog rows in all 25
languages, docs and tests.
normalize_bez ran the sweep without the catch_unwind guard that Sweep::new has,
so an outline_stroke width of 1e200 or more with a round join panicked inside
linesweeper (Left == Ish). The panic is now a Degenerate error and the art is
left unchanged. Adds hostile-number tests for the pathops edit, stroke and
offset functions.
A built-in add-on under Object › Plug-ins › Smart Pen:
- The Smart Pen Tool draws and edits Bézier paths without switching
tools: a click adds the next segment straight or curved (a panel
toggle; Tab flips the segment being placed or the last one), a drag
makes a smooth point (Alt breaks the handle, Shift snaps to 45°, Space
moves the point), a curve after a straight segment joins it tangent.
- On existing paths it selects and moves points, removes a point keeping
the shape (Alt-click), toggles smooth/corner (double-click), drags
handles, reshapes a segment by dragging it and inserts a point on it
(Alt-click); it closes, continues and joins open paths.
- The Smart Pen panel: next segment straight or curved, remove points
keeping shape, make smooth, make corner, retract handles, close or
join.
The tool stays out of both toolbars as shipped; the All Tools drawer
lists it under the add-on's heading. Commands are addon.pen.*; the
existing Pen tool, commands and menus are unchanged.
A built-in add-on under Object › Plug-ins › Path Precision Tools:
- Anchor Eraser Brush: painting over selected paths removes the anchors
under the brush that the outline can do without within a tolerance,
refitting the handles beside them (Alt ignores the tolerance, Cmd/Ctrl
deletes without refitting, pen pressure can scale the brush); one undo
step per stroke.
- Extend Path tool: dragging an end of an open path carries it on
straight, by stretching its last curve or along the circle it curves
on, or shortens it back along itself.
- Measure & Inspect tool: drag to measure distance and angle; hover a
path to read segment and path length, area, curvature, tangent and
anchor angles and handles, in the document's units.
- Anchor Inspector panel: the selected anchor's position and handles as
numbers, with Make Smooth (auto-smooth rule), Make Corner, Equalize
Handles, Remove Points Keep Shape, Add Points and three ways to close.
- Add Points at Crossings and Split at Crossings.
The tools stay out of both toolbars as shipped; the All Tools drawer
lists them under the add-on's heading. Commands are addon.pathtools.*;
the existing commands, tools and menus are unchanged.
A built-in add-on under Object › Plug-ins › Artwork Cleanup:
- Simplify Anchors (Keep Shape) removes anchors while the outline stays
within a tolerance, optionally keeping sharp corners.
- Document Health Check finds and fixes 16 kinds of problems in the
selection or the document (stray points, duplicate and collinear
anchors, tiny handles, nearly closed paths, needless groups, compound
paths and clipping groups, unpainted and invisible objects, duplicate
objects, art off every artboard, empty artboards…), with Show, Fix
Selected and Fix All, each fix one undo step.
- Deep Ungroup and Rejoin Path Pieces.
The add-on lives in its own modules (pathops, engine and ui-egui
addons folders) and leaves the existing commands, tools and menus as
they were.

The search for the faces a merge unites compared each reported face's
coverage with every picked point's coverage. The picked points are now
grouped by coverage once, before the walk, and each face is tested only
against the points of its own coverage.
A merge found the contours of the faces it unites with one contour pass
over the whole arrangement for each coverage among them, and the search
for slivers next to them did the same for each neighboring coverage.
Each in-place remnant of a merge is such a merge too, so a click on
many overlapping shapes made one pass over the whole arrangement for
each coverage, for the merged faces and again for each remnant. Both
now use the batching that Divide's regions use: one pass for each batch
of coverages whose faces share no vertex. The batching looks a face's
coverage up by a hash of the inputs that cover it, computed as it walks
them. The search for slivers looks up the merged faces' coverages the
same way.
Merging a frame no longer takes in an island of the same coverage in
its hole: each face is its outer contour and the holes directly in it,
as the regions are.
Offset Path outlined an open path on both sides, so a shape whose last
anchor sits on its first came out as a ring with a hole. Such a path is
now offset as a closed shape: its last anchor merges into its first,
which takes the last anchor's in-handle, with the same 1e-6 test that
Object › Path › Join uses for one path (crates/engine/src/cmd/path.rs).
The Offset Path effect calls the same function.
Two shapes that overlap by less than the region precision (0.01 pt) leave
their overlap out of the Shape Builder's regions as a sliver. Merging the
regions on both sides of it united only the picked faces, so the result
was a compound path with a hairline gap where the overlap had been.
A merge now takes in each dropped sliver next to a merged face when only
the merged faces' shapes fill it, both from the arrangement and from the
planar map used when open paths are selected. A thin cutout that no shape
fills stays a hole. What is left of a shape after the merge takes in a
sliver only where the shape covers it and the merged shape does not take
it in, so the two do not overlap. Pathfinder operations and Live Paint do
not use the merger and are unchanged; Live Paint's planar map does not
test which shapes cover a sliver.
CodeRabbit on #4080: `needed` summed footprint pieces before insertion
deduplicated them, so on a degenerate grid (ten collinear lines, 4,096 pieces
each in ten cells) every item exceeded the budget and went to the scanned list,
making the per-cell assertion vacuous. The cells are now collected in piece
order and consecutive repeats dropped before the budget check and the filing;
the horizontal fixture asserts `rest` is empty and that the lines are filed.
docs/target-app-parity.md: the Path operations area row, the Shape Builder
row and the evidence list record the bounded index (scores unchanged).

Follow-up to #4021. The grid filed each piece of a segment under its cells
without checking, so a degenerate grid (collinear horizontal lines: cells a
hundred points wide and a hair tall) stored one segment ~400 times per cell,
and coincident vertical segments (one column, a row per segment) filed every
segment under every row: a quadratic number of references, about a GiB for
16,384 segments within the Shape Builder's limit.
Now a segment is filed once per cell (its pieces come in order, so the cell's
last entry is enough to check), and the grid holds a budget of references
(64 per item plus four rows' or columns' worth, `reference_budget`); the
items past it go to the scanned list, so the index stays O(n·sqrt(n)) in
memory and every lookup still finds every segment through its point.
Regression: `rect_index_holds_a_bounded_number_of_references` (fails without
the change: 4,100 references per cell for ten collinear lines).

Boxes that touch at -0.0/+0.0 now count as overlapping, so the pair cap cannot be skipped. try_boolean_n, try_unite_all and try_area report a refused input, and the Pathfinder shape-mode unite and the Blob Brush use them to show an error. When the planar map is over its budget, the fallback leaves out paths that fill nothing so a flood of cutting lines cannot take the filled shapes down with it.
CodeRabbit findings #6, #19, #53, #59, #62, #167:
- Before a sweep builds a planar map (Boolean, normalize, Pathfinder, Offset Path, Live
Paint, Shape Builder), the pairs of segments whose bounds overlap are counted exactly in
O(n log n); past 4M the operation fails as `PathOpsError::TooComplex` (a crossing can only
lie where two segments' bounds overlap).
- Live Paint's winding crossings are sparse: the sweep keeps one per edge, and a vector as
long as the input count made disjoint shapes quadratic in memory.
- Gap detection groups the segments near a loose end by track once.
- 3D: ring containment checks bounds first and walks at most 50M edges; Inflate's mixed-cell
booleans take at most 4M outline segments together.
The planar map's `RectIndex` sorted rectangles narrow in x by their left
edge and those narrow in y by their top edge, and scanned the rest for
every lookup. A long diagonal segment is narrow in neither, so a hatch of
diagonals put every line in the scanned list and `Outlines::source_at`
(one lookup per edge) cost a scan of the hatch per edge: quadratic in the
hatch below the 65,536-segment cap, as CodeRabbit found on #3357.
`RectIndex` is now a grid of about one cell per item, each cell listing
the items touching it; a lookup reads the cells around the point. An item
is filed under a footprint of rectangles: its bounds (`new`), or, for a
segment, the bounds of its pieces about a cell long (`with_footprint`,
`segment_footprint`), so a diagonal is filed under the cells along it,
not under every cell its bounds cover. A footprint rectangle covering
more than 64 cells or two rows/columns (a face covering most of the art)
is scanned for every point as before; a thin stripe face is filed under
its column of cells. Cells hold `u32` indices.
Tests: `rect_index_reads_a_diagonal_hatch_only_near_the_point` (2,000
diagonals a tenth of a point apart: a lookup got 1,001 candidates with
the old index, now at most n/4, and still every line through the point;
a hatch of stripe faces is filed, not scanned; a collinear, degenerate
grid). `rect_index_finds_every_rectangle_holding_a_point` keeps the
bounds-only contract.

* CI: line tables only for workspace crates, no debug info for dependencies
* CI: one integration-test binary per crate
Each crate's tests/*.rs files become modules of tests/it/main.rs. Files that change
process-wide state (Color Settings, the font database, installed plug-ins, the working
directory), the fuzz sweeps and the test targets the Affinity corpus workflow names stay
their own binaries.
* Docs: name the integration tests' new paths
* CI: xtask test with nextest and doctests, one wasm check, clippy --keep-going
cargo xtask ci runs the tests with cargo nextest (cargo test when it is not installed),
builds them with --lib --bins --tests, runs the doctests as their own step, and checks
the wasm crates in one cargo check --keep-going call.
Where two passes of a path (an open line's way there and back) cross another
path, the sweep can cut them a rounding error apart and join the two cuts
with a stub a little over its tolerance. Upstream's twin-piece joining
already merges the ends of the two passes, but not such stubs, so dense
hatches at exact binary steps (lines every 0.5 pt across a 45° line) still
came back with a speck of a piece per crossing. The planar map now contracts
such stubs into one vertex before the edges are built (within 4x eps up and
down the sweep's frame and 1/16 of the 0.01 pt precision along it), bounded
by each cluster's extent so a run of tiny, nearly level segments (a finely
flattened or traced path) is not collapsed transitively.
Ported from the fork's d5985b14 and 616a5c4a with their tests:
a_dense_hatch_at_exact_binary_steps_cuts_each_line_once_per_crossing (fails
without the fix), a_run_of_tiny_level_segments_is_not_contracted_as_stubs
(fails without the extent bound) and
a_line_crossed_where_its_two_passes_part_is_cut_once (already passing on
upstream, kept as a regression test).

The Pathfinder panel menu's Trap… (object.pathfinder.trap) and Effect › Pathfinder › Trap… (pathfinder.trap, live on groups) share one geometry (vectorcraft_pathops::trap_band, vectorcraft_effects::trap): Thickness, Height/Width, Tint Reduction, Traps with Process Color and Reverse Traps, plus the effect's Precision and Remove Redundant Points. The panel's Trap is one undo step and groups the traps above the topmost selected object. Behaviour from https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/trapping.html and https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/pathfinder-panel-overview.html.
The Simplify help page says a path can be simplified whole or "a specific
path region with the Direct Selection tool"
Simplify refitted every selected path whole, whatever part of it was
direct-selected.
object.path.simplify now looks at each path's direct selection: the
segments picked as segments, or else every segment with both anchors
selected. Each run of consecutive selected segments is refitted on its own
(vectorcraft_pathops::simplify_part) between its two end anchors, which stay
where they are with their handles on the side away from the run; every
other anchor and segment stays exactly as it was. A closed path's run may
cross its start point (the path then starts at the run's end anchor),
separate runs on one path simplify independently in one undo step, and the
runs stay direct-selected (as segments when segments were picked). A path
with only lone anchors selected still simplifies whole, as before, and
wholePaths: true simplifies partly selected paths whole. The slider, its
preview, Auto-Simplify and the Simplify dialog all run the command, so
they act on the part too. simplify_with now shares its run fitting with
the part refit (same results).
Verification: crates/engine/src/tests_simplify_part.rs (unselected anchors
and segments equal bit for bit, run end anchors fixed, the run within the
tolerance, two runs equal to each simplified alone in one undo step, a
closed run across the start point, picked segments, wholePaths, slider
preview and Auto-Simplify, a run that can't be simpler records no step)
and simplify_slider_and_dialog_simplify_only_the_direct_selected_part_of_a_path
(the slider's preview, Enter and the dialog's OK). Live: the release build's
slider at level 20 on a 91-anchor wave with anchors 30–60 selected refits
only that stretch.
The Simplify help page says the slider starts at an auto-simplified value
(https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/draw-shapes-and-paths/modify-paths/manually-simplify-paths.html).
The slider opened at a fixed level 50 (1 pt), whatever the size of the
selection, so the first preview was the same tolerance for a 30 pt icon as
for a 1000 pt drawing.
The level Auto-Simplify picks for the selection is now one engine function,
vectorcraft_engine::auto_simplify_level (the existing 1/400-of-the-longer-
side rule in vectorcraft_pathops), which object.path.simplify {auto: true}
and the slider's opening fields both use. Object › Path › Simplify (and
ui.menuDialog, the Properties and contextual task bar buttons, which go
through the same menu dialog) opens the slider there, and the canvas
previews that result; Auto-Simplify still moves the slider back to it.
The retained Simplify dialog path is unchanged.
Verification: simplify_slider_opens_at_the_auto_simplify_level_of_the_selection
opens the slider on 1140, 285 and 28.5 pt waves (levels 35, 55, 89) and
checks the preview is exactly object.path.simplify {auto: true}'s result;
without the change it fails with level 50 != 35, and
simplify_opens_a_slider_whose_drag_previews_fewer_or_more_points fails with
{"level": 50} != {"level": 55}. cargo xtask ci: all 10 steps passed.
The planar map found each edge's source input by scanning every input
segment, and the face around each hole or merge point by scanning every
face, so it was quadratic in the segments; the Shape Builder therefore
gave up past 4096 segments (traced or type outlines) and offered whole
shapes. Index outline segments and faces by bounds on both axes
(RectIndex), walk an edge's segments lazily when finding its leaving
angle, and raise SHAPE_BUILDER_MAX_SEGMENTS to 65,536. Divide with open
paths shares the cap; its cap test now follows the constant.
Tests: a 20,000-segment blob cut by two lines, a 300-line hatch, the
index against a brute-force scan, and the existing cap test at the new
cap. Progress docs updated (G11, parity evidence, roadmap).
